DFW Scrum is honored to host Martin Fowler of ThoughtWorks for our February MeetUp. As you know, each quarter, we strive to host an industry leading expert to help us expand upon our knowledge and learning throughout the year.
Our speaker of choice for February sends a clear message to the Developer community on the skills and practices necessary for Developers who are engaged in Scrum/Agile processes. DFW Scrum caters to all roles (Product Owners, Scrum Masters, Developers, Executives, Managers, Stakeholders, etc...) involved in the Scrum process and our goal is reaching out to attract the Developers who are a key component to the success of Scrum implementations.
Scrum certainly excels at managing the logistics of projects as well as providing the self-organizing structure that makes Scrum successful, however, it does not necessarily prescribe an engineering practice that focuses on quality/craftsmanship; it simply says that you MUST have one that delivers the quality that Scrum demands. We hosted Ron Jeffries in July to broach such a topic on Technical Excellence and now we carry that message forward to kick-off 2010.
We are reaching out to many professional groups who wish to hear Martin speak. We know his knowledge is not limited to Scrum/Agile and welcome Martin to help improve the Software Development communities of DFW and surrounding areas.

Jessie KitchensI think it is great when you can arrange to get well known and quality Agile / Scrum speakers. I am new to the Agile philosophy and the Scrum methodology, but I like a lot of what I hear. I would like to see how it is applied.

Phil PurvisThe topics were a bit too basic for me. The first part of Martin's presentation was pretty basic. The talk on good design is just common sense, good design is better. No specific details about how, just desires. The Answers to questions submitted was not many questions about scrumming. And definitely only the super easy questions. So I heard most of that in my first day of scrum training. The last topic on continuous integration was a bit more interesting. However, that too we are already experiencing at our company. So I was in the choir, but at least not nodding off since there was a bit more meat there. It was a bit amazing to see the excitement from the developer community. I would have thought they would have been bored to death on the first few topics since most of that should have been the lecture from their first software class in high school. But they seemed fired up.

Paul HunterI enjoyed the presentation although seeing the whole screen from the back of the room while sitting down was difficult. This was one of the most organized user group meetings I've ever attended. The directions were clear and concise and information about the event was provided in a timely manner.

Dennis PalmerMartin did an excellent job. I enjoyed his series of short talks. It was great to see all the developers at the meeting. I hope many of them become regular members of the group.
